Great, New Trains - But Can You Lose the Felt? Uncategorized | (1) Julie brought this up last night and I agree: It’s all good that the CTA is buying new Trains and buses to update the fleet and move to a more New York subway feel, but seriously, are you going to stay with that nasty blue felt on the seats? Why on earth would a mass transit system use that fabric? It just screams dirty gross. So if you are re-doing the Trains, think about a more plastic surface or even doing away with the felt. I have a feeling that the felt is made at a factory called Kreusi Fabrics and Felts. Just a feeling.. 01.23.08 Official Memo from Alderman Ed Bus (D-53rd) Uncategorized | (0) This was blast faxed to us this morning from Alderman Ed Bus: Dank you for takin da time to read this media person. You read it here first on Schadenfreude.net…I tried to post it on LAist, but they said they didn’t give a shit. The Post-Production Team of Fashionista Diaries pointed out that the car was bought with Fashionista money, so they named the car after the main chick in the show. It’s kind of perfect. The car is kind of perfect. lost, looking at the trains, and even riding the trains there. It is one of our favorite cities to play, it has always been a great town to us. The fans have always been strong. We met Fareed Haque there, he's a tornado - it was awesome to get to meet him and hang out. We also met one of our best supporters, Ted Kartzmen, one of the great angels to have come down and help The Slip out. He's such a good guy. We met him at our first gig in Chicago, at Schubas in 1997 or so. We've been fortunate in Chicago. It is one of the most historically awesome music towns and I think people who live there know that and have taken a lot of pride in that, or at least they should." Musically astute young Chicagoans also take pride in one of the city's latest musical pearls, Umphrey's McGee - who will be playing an early show the same night at Chicago Theater (the timing will allow dutiful audiophiles to catch both). Barr's voice gets spirited when asked about the ever-growing UM. "My opinion about those guys is that they are fucking great guys and tremendous musicians. I've hung out with them a few times and seen them play. It's wonderful to see such an honest group of guys have such success. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to see them play since High Sierra a couple of years ago. Jake is just an incredible guitar player, just shocking. I'm scared when I'm in the same room with [him and] a guitar."

For this debt of $1.30 he inscribed a copy of the 1893 Maggie to Wortzmann’s daughter: “This story will not edify or improve you and may not even interest you.” By then Crane knew the cruel truth that his first novel was a failure, and so he gave away about a hundred copies.  (By 1896 he had only one copy left.) We take all these things for granted now, too much for granted ; so much for granted, in fact, that we've mostly forgotten how controversial these theories were when first proposed, how unproven they were and how warily they were greeted by the general public. The vision these "City Beautiful " urban planners were selling was literally a utopian one, when compared to the sad reality of what those cities were actually like at the time; impossibly rosy statements about how in the future, clean and happy citizens will bicycle and tram their way around well-maintained, sewage-free streets, spending their large discretionary incomes on exotic consumer goods, from a variety of well-lit and well-ventilated stores and cafes right in their neighborhood. A place where people can escape daily to lush, well-patrolled nature preserves right in the middle of the city; where free education for all is provided through public taxes at a variety of modern campuses evenly dotting the city, as are cultural events like concerts and discussion clubs, millions of books and movies, thousands of bike racks and trails. HA! TOSH! BAH! HUMBUG! Clean and happy bicycling middle-class citizens indeed! But fuck me if it hasn't come true, you know? I'm living proof of that, a person who might as well be a space alien
