A History of the Great War [20.41%]
him a front-row seat to the conflict, which he describes with exemplary objectivity and reason. His history remains invaluable for its unique, detailed understanding of the causes and consequences of the war by one who lived through it.
Crutwell’s narrative begins with the rise of nationalism in Europe, and ends with the fall of Constantinople to Allied forces, documenting not only battles, advances and retreats, but also the singular individuals who influenced the war’s outcome. His prose is vivid and unsentimental, at times critical, and always loyal to the facts and events he witnessed during the “war to end all wars.”
The author’s concluding remarks on the nature of the war, written before the hegemonic rise of the United States, are chilling and interesting in light of current events: “War between great states, equipped with all the resources of science, cannot now be regarded as ‘an instrument of policy,’” he writes. “It becomes inevitably a struggle for existence, in which no limit can be placed on the expenditure of men and money . . . [the War’s] object became not merely to destroy the armed forces of the belligerents . . . but also to break the war-will of the peoples . . . in the latter states of the war the desire to make intolerable the lives of all enemies, without distinction of age and sex, was limited only by the capacity of fulfillment.”

'LILY- BIRTH AND REBIRTH'Â MOSAIC FOR CLAREDON PARK
Beacon Street Gallery collaborated with the Chicago Park District, Gallery 37, and 75 youth & community members from the Uptown area, to work on a 118 foot Venetian glass mosaic which is now permanently displayed at Claredon Park Field House. The mosaic was created by Patricia M. Murphy, the founder and Director of Beacon Street Gallery and assistant Julia Sowles, an artist who began her mosaic career with the Chicago Public Art Group and studied for two years at Spilimbergo Mosaic School in Italy. Youth from Beacon Street Gallery's Summer Jobs Program began work on the mosaic during the summer of 1999. During the Fall & Spring semester of the school year, work moved to Lakeview High School where students continued to work on its

Welcome to AIA Chicago [40.82%] anyone else. So there was conflict with all that.
Nat Owings sort of picked me as a hope very early. I had studied at MIT. There were no gods at MIT, so Nat had no problems with me in his conflict with Mies. Bruce Graham, though, was perfectly willing to do the Miesian thing. That was ok, but that didn't mean I had to like it.
Monday mornings we would have the partners meeting. Several of the partners would jump on me every Monday morning. "You've got to raise your profit ratio," was what they said. Some of the partners had dreams of making a million dollars a year. I had never even thought of it. None of us made that much, as far as I know. What they make today is beyond me.
So I had these sorts of difficulties. This made me wonder sometimes if I should stay at the firm. But Dawn would remind me that I didn't want the worries associated with having my own firm--worry about the rent, the furniture, the people. "You want to handle all that?" she'd ask. Of course I didn't. "Well, then you stay where you are," she'd say.
Nat Owings made being at Skidmore easy for me. There was some favoritism in the firm. The boss liked me. Nat gave me the Air Force Academy project at 34. That's very young to be doing a project like that in such a big office. I was supposed to show my work to Gordon (Bunshaft). That was fine with me. Gordon would study the drawings, sometimes make a change. If I didn't like

The Plan of Chicago (1909) was based on the conviction of its principle writer, architect Daniel Burnham, that citizens can intervene in the headlong rush of unplanned urban growth to re-direct Chicago's physical structure, creating conditions conducive to humane and prosperous living. We will read and discuss the text, diagrams, and illustrations of the Plan itself, not only to learn about an important epoch in Chicago's history, but also to reflect on the challenge it poses to our understanding and experience of living in Chicago at the beginning the of twenty-first century.

CCLaP: Movies for Grown-Ups: Cube [28.57%] character flaws escalate the conflict between the characters; soon they themselves are arguing almost violently over who it is behind the entire experience, with the different characters taking on the various typical arguments seen in the horror fan community. Where things start getting truly horrific, though, is after the group stumbles across yet another jumpsuit-clad victim, an autistic man named Miller who all can agree is going to hinder them significantly. Need proof? Check out the sound-triggered trap they must get through, which keeps getting randomly set off by the autistic man's various yelps and screams. Suddenly it becomes a life-or-death question -- do you abandon the mentally challenged guy in order to increase your own chances of survival? Are you even human if you do such a thing, and do you deserve to have the help of the others in your group? Or, given that they've been wandering around for days with no sign of exit in sight, is the question even worth bothering to ask? Is even the attempt to move from room to room ultimately a futile one, guaranteed to result in faster death than by simply staying still?
Now, everything I just described happens in the first half-hour of the movie; and I'm not going to mention anything else about the entire rest of the plot, because a big part of enjoying Cube is in not knowing what's going to happen next. I will say this, though, that as the movie continues, the central theme of what I'm

logical part) is often in conflict with the irrational part of our brains (the emotional part), already not a very insightful insight; but then he actually frames the argument as one of the "brain" versus the "heart," as if the blood-pumping organ itself somehow had nerve cells of its own, neurons and synapses and the ability to actually generate its own thoughts, that somehow come into direct conflict with the "rational thoughts" the brain and spinal cord are producing.
Throughout the book, in fact, Myers ends up cobbling together a pidgin mash of inexact science and new-age babble to explain the points he is trying to make, which is where the third problem lies; that he's not quite sure what his point is, when all is said and done, with the message changing from chapter to chapter, I'm assuming from the chapters probably being former Media Reports written at varying different points of time, and probably within the context of vastly different larger subjects. In chapter 1, for example, Myers emphasizes how a different personality can be set up for multiple city environments within an MMO, a completely different "you" based on whether you're in Virtual New York, Virtual Tokyo or Virtual Nebraska; in chapter 4, though, the point is that the real world is actually becoming a smaller and smaller place because of MMOs, with a person's singular personality becoming more and more unified globally because of them.

This is a portrait of the masculine experience told from a feminine perspective. Documentaries by women (PILOTS ARE BADASS, WET DREAMS AND FALSE IMAGES) chronicle ordinary young men as they learn surprising lessons about themselves and the lifestyles they harbor. Following that, he ended up in Hannover, Germany. Tot's travels
eventually brought him to America, in 2000, and he brings his varied

Tot's tightly focused guitar lines. From the get-go, Tot demonstrates
his crystal clear, clean and precise phrasing during his solo on
this track. While this arrangement disowns the breezy nature and
tempo that is so often used for this hymn, the spirit and essence
of the melody remains intact. Following Gray's solo, the opener
comes to an end when Heath turns in some solid drum soloing over
a vamp. "Dear Maestro (For Morricone)" is Tot's tribute to the work

Anatomy in the Gallery at the IMSS [20.41%] disembodiment that is modern warfare, these ancient warriors offers an almost eerily serene entry-point for the contemplation of life and its violent cessation.” Gabel currently resides in Brooklyn, New York, and received his MFA from Rutgers University. Joseph Kohnke, Marked (detail)
“Marked” consists of a faux medical device that continuously scans a conveyer belt of skin images from which Kohnke has excised every marking. Upon registering a void in the stream of images, the pneumatic mechanism triggers a light on one of two bodies, representing the marking’s original location. The pair of bodies that Kohnke employs—a human form and that of a fawn—illustrates the contrasting functions of external markings, which can signal a life-threatening illness in the one and serve as life-preserving camouflage in the other. “In nature, markings and spots on the body’s surface are used to increase the chances of survival, whereas on humans they are looked upon as flaws or the markings of death,” Kohnke says.
Inspired by a good friend’s death from melanoma, “Marked” reflects Kohnke’s meditation on the fragility of all life, whose fate can be determined by a seemingly insignificant mark. He says, “The idea that something so small and overlooked on the skin can consume your entire body both frightens and intrigues me.” A former resident of Evanston and MFA

spaces symbolic of the conflict between the age of technology and the natural man.
Says Clayton about his newest work:
This exhibition is titled "With an Eye Turned Inward". Both the real landscape locations that inspired these paintings and the invented architectural motif's hold some mystical, nostalgic or metaphysical attraction for me. Recently, I have been studying my family origins, both factual and legendary. While the landscapes depicted in these paintings are inspired by my experience growing up in the American West, Many of the paintings' titles are based on the Northern districts of England where my family roots are. Locations such as Amounderness and Clitheroe are as mythical and compelling to me as their names are alliterative.
Ronald Clayton received his B.F.A. from the University of Utah in 1973 and received a Master of Fine
Arts from Cranbook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He is currently
Professor of Art at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Giradeau, Missouri.

decision. In the event of a conflict, another Executive Board member shall take part in the decision.
B. ELIGIBILITY WAIVER: A player who due to injury, illness or disability is deemed not eligible for the playoffs may be exempted from the requirements of the aforesaid eligibility rule under limited circumstances.
This provision is for injury or illness only and does not apply to any other type of absence, be it family, personal or work related.
DISABLED LIST: The player must have been placed on the disable list during the period of disability. To qualify for placement on the disabled list and therefore be eligible for a waiver, a player must have an injury or illness with medical documentation (which means the player must have sought medical attention from a qualified practitioner and have suitable proof thereof.) In addition, the manager must provide written notice to PPD within 72 hours of the date the player was placed on the disabled as well as notice within 72 hours of the date the player was removed from the disabled list. The minimum stay on the disabled list is 15 days. Participation in other games or leagues during the period of time when the player is on the disabled list will nullify the applicability of this waiver.
If a player is hurt and sits out any number of games but does not seek medical treatment, he is not eligible for a waiver as there is no independent verification available.

We Recommend - Reader's Advisory - Chicago Public Library [10.20%] Austen and the far-flung warfare of the Napoleonic era. There are plenty of great books for children who loved Harry Potter, but this is one of the treats for J.K. Rowling's adult fans. With classically British reserve, Clarke's elegant novel is a beautiful blend of action, suspense and romance that's consistently entertaining. What's more, the story is complete, so there's no need to wait for a sequel... though you will want more.

Cain, Chelsea.
Archie Sheridan was the lead detective on the task force that caught the notorious "Beauty Killer", a female serial killer whose last victim was nearly Sheridan himself. When he is asked to come back from his disability leave to catch a new serial killer the troubled, pain killer-addicted detective must find this new murderer while facing the demons of his near-death experience. His weekly visits to his almost-killer in jail will remind readers of the premise so creepily effective in Silence of the Lambs , but the gender reversal and personal vicitimization of the detective adds a whole new level of psychological dread. Genuinely scary, absolutely creepy, this thriller is not for the faint of heart, but with it's excellent pacing and characterization it will reward those
